agac19_00.png

It’s that time of year again!

Starting next Sunday, 1 December, we are counting down the days to the winter holidays with our traditional Advent Calendar contest.

There will be 24 pictures from Andrew Gower‘s career – past, present and future – that will be posted on all our Social Media outlets, on Twitter, Facebook (Page and Group), Instagram and in our Gallery on 24 consecutive days leading up to Christmas Eve.

All “days” will be posted at 12pm (CET) on Social Media and uploaded to our Gallery soon after.

To enter the contest and win one of our exclusive prizes, including the highly prestigious title as “Andrew Gower Fan of the Year”, you need to do the following:

  • Like the picture and comment with your guess of the context (what TV show, movie, event is it from?)
  • Alternatively – if you don’t have a Social Media account – you can simply e-mail us.

As an example, have a look at our past Advent Calendars 2016, 2017 and 2018.

Every honest guess (whether correct or not) will enter your name to the drawing pot from which winners will be chosen on 1 January 2020. One guess per day and person only, but you can guess every day which will increase your chances to win.

(Disclaimer: We’re an open-minded group and respect all faiths and (non-)beliefs. We love all fans of Andrew Gower, no matter which holiday they celebrate this time of year, or whether they celebrate any at all!)

Carnival Row S2 Officially Resumes Production

carnivalrowart.jpg

The official Carnival Row accounts on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook have confirmed that the production of Season 2 of the Amazon Prime series is back on track again with this video.

Watch Cara Delevingne, Orlando Bloom, Tamzin Merchant and David Gyasi tease what’s in store for their characters and the world of Carnival Row in Season 2!

In the past few days, they had already shared some posts on their personal Instagram accounts that seemed to indicate that they’re back in Prague.

The show had been put on hiatus to allow the new showrunner Erik Oleson and new story editor Laurie Penny to review the existing material after a major shake up behind scenes had seen the original creator Travis Beacham leave the show due to “creative differences”.

Even though, Andrew Gower doesn’t appear in the video, he is confirmed to reprise his role as Ezra Spurnrose and will probably be seen hunting his fugitive sister Imogen (Tamzin Merchant) and her forbidden lover Agreus (David Gyasi) in the new season.

30 Facts about Andrew Gower

In the run-up to Andrew Gower‘s 30th birthday on 8 November we tweeted a “30 Facts about Andrew Gower” countdown. In case you missed some of them (or would like to read them again) Here is the complete countdown again with some trivia that you may or may not know about him yet. Enjoy!

1to5

1. Andrew Gower was born in Aintree, a small villiage near Liverpool, which makes him a true Scouser (Scouse is the dialect spoken in/around Liverpool).

2. Scouse is also a type of lamb or beef stew popular in the Liverpool region and (in variations) in countries around the North Sea. Think lapskaus in Norway, lapskojs in Sweden, skipperlabskovs in Denmark, and Labskaus in northern Germany.

3. He dreamed about becoming a professional football player when he was younger. He still occassionally plays with his team FC Beaujolais or for charity. Our #ManOfTheMatch!

4. The “love of his life” is his favourite football team, Everton. #COYB

5. If he could choose a super power, he’d want the ability to fly. We’re sure that can be arranged in a future film, TV show or play!

6to10

6. Music was his first love. He’s a self-proclaimed “obsessed” Beatles fan and would love to play John Lennon one day.

7. He was 15 when he formed his band Emerson with some friends and played gigs in NW England, most notably in the famous Cavern Club (where The Beatles also regularly played in their early years) in Liverpool.

8. Andrew Gower graduated from the Oxford School of Drama and was awarded the prestigious Spotlight Prize in 2010.

9. His Spotlight award winning performance was a monologue from the play Me, As a Penguin by English playwright Tom Wells.

10. He appeared with fellow OSD student Nell Hudson (Outlander‘s Laoghaire) in the school’s production of After The Fall by Arthur Miller.

11to15

11. In May 2010 he appeared in the play “Once Upon a General Election” directed by none other than Fleabag‘s Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

12. He had a small part in Jon Stewart‘s film Rosewater, alongside Gael García Bernal and Claire Foy.

13. Short films can be little gems of cinematography. One of them is Manjinder Virk‘s Out Of Darkness in which Andrew Gower appeared alongside Tom Hiddleston (among others). If you haven’t yet, you need to watch it!

14. The Gower Peninsula is a popular holiday destination in Wales, there’s a Gower Street in London and one in Los Angeles, but there’s no connection between them or our Andrew Gower.

15. He has played two medical professionals in his career so far: trainee surgeon Andrew Mullery (Monroe) & notable Dr Victor Frankenstein (Frankenstein’s Wedding)

16to20

16. He does intense research when creating his characters, and even his baddie characters have a human side that makes the audience feel and root for them. #TeamEzra #TeamCutler

17. In preparation for his first professional role as trainee surgeon Andrew Mullery on medical drama Monroe, Andrew Gower watched two coronary artery bypass surgeries while standing next to the actual surgeons.

18. So far almost all his characters have had either weird love lives or creative deaths – or both. Only The Village‘s Gilbert Hankin enjoyed some kind of Happy End.

19. Five of his characters died a total of 7 deaths (6 of them on screen). None of them died of natural causes. He was shot (twice), stabbed, choked, bled and clubbed to death (twice). Ouch!

20. He played 2 supernatural characters in his career so far: a vampire (Being Human‘s Nick Cutler) and a zombie (Misfits‘ Jake), both of them back-to-back in 2012.

21to25

21. History vs. Fiction: He’s played 6 real life figures so far: Roman emperor Caligula, The White Queen‘s Lord Strange, Outlander‘s Bonnie Prince Charlie, Poldark‘s James Hadfield and musician Tommy Quickly.

22. As Bonnie Prince Charlie he muttered his (in)famous catchphrase “Mark Me” only 17 times in 9 of his 10 Outlander episodes, so less than twice per episode.

23. Carnival Row is the first time he’s acted in a fantasy setting. His other projects are split evenly between historical (12) and contemporary (12).

24. Andrew Gower is without doubt our favourite, but what are some of his? His favourite ice-cream is pistachio, his favourite comfort food is cereal and he loves the rice pudding his mom used to make for him when he was a kid.

25. Not surprisingly, he has also worked as a voice actor, taking part in two radio plays for BBC Radio 4 and lending his distinctive voice to cartoon character Mudlark in The Tall Tales Of Urchin.

26to30

26. The radio play Dark Visions: Speak references George Orwell’s 1984. Andrew Gower gave is London West End debut in a theatre adaption of the famous dystopian novel in 2016.

27. His favourite films are Back To The Future parts 1 and 2 (not 3!) (Wooohoo time travel!). However, despite being a Brit, he’s never seen an episode of Doctor Who. Shocking, we know…

28. His Black Mirror episode “Crocodile” filmed in Iceland during the largest snowfall in 40 years while Carnival Row filmed in Prague during the Beast From The East. Sweden (for short film Ark) looks rather snowy, too!

29. Miss Scarlet And The Duke will be the second time he dives into the world of 19th century crime solving after playing the great detective Sherlock Holmes on Murdoch Mysteries.

30. He turns 30 years old on 8 November 2019! Happy birthday, Andrew Gower!

First Day of Filming for Carnival Row S2

IMG_20190925_093520_059.jpg

Carnival Row‘s creator Travis Beacham shared this picture via his Instagram account from the first day of filming season 2 this morning. Actors already seen on set (or on the way to set) include Cara Delevingne, Orlando Bloom, Tamzin Merchant, David Gyasi, Caroline Ford and Ariyon Bakare.

Also reprising his role as Ezra Spurnrose will be Andrew Gower.

This means production of the new episodes begins almost to the day two years after principal photography for season 1 started.

We’ll keep you posted with all news as soon as we find them.

Follow our social media accounts on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook for the full coverage!

Ezra is back for Carnival Row S2

travisbeacham_20190923202336.png

We take this picture (shared by Carnival Row creator Travis Beacham on his Instagram) as official confirmation that Andrew Gower will be reprising his role as Ezra Spurnrose in the show’s second season.

Actors already seen on set (or on the way to set) include Cara Delevingne, Orlando Bloom, Tamzin Merchant, David Gyasi, Caroline Ford and Ariyon Bakare.

So far it can only be speculated when new episodes of the fantasy-noir series will be released on Amazon Prime but some time in 2021 seems likely.

Carnival Row: Getting Ready for Season 2

IMG_20190910_173754_671.jpg

All the signs are all pointing in the right direction: season 2 of Carnival Row is coming, and, as they did during the production of season 1, the cast and crew are keeping us updated with Behind the Scenes photos via their social media accounts.

After scouting for some new locations that will be featured in the new season, the cast are starting to arrive at the Barrandov Studios in Prague (Czech Republic), where most of season 1 was filmed.

Andrew Gower‘s involvement in season 2 isn’t confirmed yet but we are rather confident that we haven’t seen the last of his character Ezra Spurnrose.

Travis Beacham Explains Evolution of Carnival Row

beacham_merchant.jpg

Twitter user Shannon Corbeil asked Carnival Row creator Travis Beacham (pictured above with actress Tamzin Merchant who plays Imogen Spurnrose on the fantasy noir series) how the script called A Killing on Carnival Row for a full length feature film Beacham wrote in 2005 ended up as an Amazon Prime series coming out in 2019.

Beacham was happy to answer in a series of tweets and it’s an interesting read!

1) So Carnival Row was a short film I wrote in film school, wanting to direct. Born from a litany of bizarre influences. Dickens, The Third Man, Brassaï, Jack the Ripper lore, Celtic mythology, etc. But to my chagrin, the faculty balked at making it.

2) My screenwriting teacher convinced me to write the feature. This felt like the height of indulgence. I ADORED it but could not imagine anyone else would. It was so dense & weird. Then an alumni interning in LA asked me to send it to him, which I did, thinking nothing of it.

3) A month or so later, he calls me (still in film school) and says, “You should know you’re going to start getting phone calls.” And my life, truly, was never the same after that. Within a year, I had agents, I’d met Guillermo del Toro, and Carnival Row was on the Black List.

4) It was very warmly received in Hollywood, and sold to New Line, but quickly proved almost impossible to make for a host of dull reasons. So it became kind of a sacrificial lamb in my mind. This pure thing I loved intensely that had to die so I could have a career.

5) And it really was very dead. But it kept coming up. Years later, I’d still get asked in meetings, “Carnival Row, I loved that script. What’s going on with that one?” And I’d have to force a smile & say, “Oh I don’t know,” while thinking — you are never going to see that one.

6) But at some point, shortly after I took a bit of a thumping on an unrelated pilot experience, Legendary acquires Carnival Row from New Line. And Thomas Tull calls to ask, “So what do you think about making this as a tv show?” And like that, it wasn’t dead anymore.

7) Finally, we shopped it around. Amazon happily snapped it up. We wrote it. Hired a crew. Found a cast. Went to Prague. Built the Row. Shot the whole thing. And it’s coming out on August 30th, in open defiance of the natural order. #CarnivalRow

8) And I don’t know what lessons there are to draw. It’s still so surreal to me that it’s happening. I know people reach for comparisons b/c they have to, I guess, but to me it’s this thing that’s been in my life for ages and is suddenly real. Which is the craziest part.

News on Humpty Dumpty Screening soon!

olv18_agsw74croparc.jpg

Things are really moving fast now – only two months after Andrew Gower and Stephen Walters wrapped filming on their first joint venture, they announced today that soon they’ll be ready to share the news on the screening of Humpty Dumpty (now called Humpty Fu*king Dumpty) with the fans.

Almost two years ago, they announced their big announcement that they’re starting a crowd-funding campaign on Kickstarter to finance their “passion project” in a similar way.

If you’re on Twitter, click the link and tell Andrew and Stephen how excited you are about Humpty Fu*king Dumpty!

First Look: Poldark ADR Session

British actress Kerri McLean, who will play “formidable new character” Catherine Despard in the upcoming 5th season of Poldark, shared the following pictures from their first ADR session on Instagram. ADR stands for automatic or automated dialogue replacement, and – according to this article – is usually done towards the end of the editing and post-production process.

So we not only get a first glance at the new season but it also means post-production for Poldark is in its final stages!

Not long now until we can see Ross and Demelza again – and of course meet James Hadfield played by Andrew Gower!

ETA:

Actor Harry Richardson, who plays Demelza Poldark’s brother Drake Carne, has now also shared a picture on his Instagram, sneakily taken during his ADR session.

Poldark S5 Still in Editing

poldark-logo

Mammoth Screens, the production company behind British period drama Poldark, took to Twitter today to explain the recent lack of updates:

Dearest fans, we know you are eagerly awaiting S5 news and exclusives. We promise they are coming but we’re still in the edit at this stage. There will be an official launch in due course…keep your eyes peeled for info on ‘s website 😉

We won’t take our eyes off of the BFI website and Twitter account to bring you any news on Poldark‘s final season and Andrew Gower as James Hadfield as soon as possible!

Humpty Dumpty goes into Editing

The official Humpty Dumpty Twitter account shared this great BTS shot of Stephen Walters and Andrew as they’re entering the edit process on their short film about Tommy Quickly.

Good luck, Andrew & Stephen, and please keep us updated! We cannot wait to hear and see more!

It’s a Wrap on Humpty Dumpty!

HDxKS002

Andrew announced today on Twitter that he and Stephen Walters wrapped filming their documentary Humpty Dumpty about English singer Tommy Quickly, and they’re about to enter the editing process.

They will also send out the perks to their backers who supported Humpty Dumpty on Kickstarter.

Congratulations, Andrew and Stephen!

We cannot wait to see the finished product and are in no doubt that it will be an absolute treat with the two of you at the helm!

Season 2 for Carnival Row?

carnival row

According to writer Travis Beacham, Andrew‘s upcoming series Carnival Row starring Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne, is in talks for a second season already. After all the buzz the show has already created over the past one and a half years since production was announced, this is hardly suprising and proof we are really in for a treat and Amazon Studios like the material they’ve got from season one.

Let’s just hope we’ll get to see some of that material as well soon!

New short Ark filming in Sweden

arkIG03

With simultaneous posts on Instagram, Andrew Gower, Tamzin Merchant and Barney Douglas announced their new project today. They recently filmed short film Ark near Horndal, Sweden at the Smens Experience Retreat.

Andrew and Tamzin previously worked together on Carnival Row and Running Naked which are both scheduled to be released this year.

Not much else is known about the project yet but we’ll let you know as soon as we find out more!

Follow Andrew Gower, Tamzin Merchant and Barney Douglas on Instagram and visit our Ark Gallery.

Humpty Dumpty News!

musicHumptyDumpty

After backers of Humpty Dumpty received an update via e-mail last week, Stephen Walters took to Twitter today to let everyone know that the “Tommy Quickley project is on its way” and promised a first look at his and Andrew’s upcoming documentary about the English singer soon.

Follow Humpty Film on Twitter for more updates! (but we’ll keep you updated here as well!)

Last week of filming Carnival Row

Carnival Row‘s Travis Beacham shared these two shots from the “final week on set“.

Let’s hope it really is the final “final” week of filming and we’ll soon have more news, pictures, trailers and a release date for the upcoming Amazon Prime show!

ETA:

Orlando Bloom and Travis Beacham have both confirmed via Instagram that Carnival Row has wrapped filming (again) this morning at 4am.

Andrew cast in Poldark

theandrewgower_20190117223750.png

If we interpret Andrew Gower‘s latest Instagram post correctly, he’s filmed some scenes for the upcoming (and presumably last) season of historical period drama Poldark.

James Hadfield is an actual historical figure, a solider in the French Revolutionary Wars, who attempted to assassinate the British King George III but was acquitted of attempted murder by reason of insanity.

Sounds like a “killer” of a character for Andrew to play!

Filming of Poldark‘s 5th and final season has been underway since September 2018 and it is scheduled to be released later this year. No release date has been announced as of yet, but we’ll keep you posted as soon as we find out more!

Carnival Row resumes Reshoot

Poetry Winner

The winner of our poetry contest is the wonderfully talented poet, our Twitter follower and group member Jackie Merrell!

She originally wrote this poem for Andrew when he attended Starfury’s Highlanders 3 convention in Birmingham this summer. The poem itself is about Outlander‘s Bonnie Prince Charlie.

The White Cockade
by J. Merrell

It’s hard to know,
just who you can trust,
surrounded by the white cockade
proudly worn in solidarity,
yet no loyalty in sight,
emblem of my family
and symbol of my duty displayed,
will anything I do matter
to the man I call father?
Fighting for a cause not my own
in a country with no real ties
holding me to its breast,
and in the end I don’t know
which way to turn
or what is right anymore
in the blinding blaze of battles lost.

Andrew loved the poem – and who are we to disagree with him?

thank you birthday contest

Huge thank you to everyone who celebrated our 2nd birthday with us and participated in our contest!

The response was a little overwhelming (but in a good way!), so please give us a couple of days to go through everyone’s answers and draw the winners.

  • There will be one main prize for each category (fan art, poetry & caption this!) – what it exactly the prize is, is still a bit of a surprise!
  • There will be special Social Media shout-outs for one of our followers on Twitter, Instagram, our Facebook Page, and one of our members of our Facebook Group!
  • And last but not least we have eight shiny super sized postcards that are looking for recipients, who will be drawn at random!

We hope all the winners will enjoy their prizes and thank you again for taking part! Don’t be sad if you’re not among the winners this time, there will be more contests in the future!

Please e-mail us your contributions by 22 September 2018! All winners will be announced the following week!

Good luck! 🤞🍀

We’re only two days away from our big birthday bash!

Only 10 days later, on 22 September 2016, the Twitter account followed.

In (almost) two years, we gained 351 members on Facebook and 1870 followers on Twitter – reason enough for us to say a HUGE THANK YOU for all the love and support!

Murdoch Mysteries Petition

CBC ad

If you loved Andrew’s performance as David Kingsley/ Sherlock Holmes as much as we did, we’d appreciate it if you’d consider signing our petition.

Even if it might not sway the Murdoch Mysteries‘s producers and writers to actually bring him back (one can still hope!), it will show Andrew our support and appreciation of his work.
