Watch a trailer for season 1 (Andrew makes a brief cameo towards the end):

Monroe season 1 premiered in the UK on 10 March 2011 and ran until 14 April 2011. Monroe returned with season 2 on 1 October 2012 with the ultimate episode airing on 5 November 2012.

James Nesbitt stars as brilliant and unusual neurosurgeon Monroe in this brand new medical drama.

The drama will focus on the way in which a serious injury or disease cuts across the lives of everyone involved, from hospital staff to patients to relatives. And how that group become, in an intense few days, a reluctant, dysfunctional family united by hopes, fears and grief.

Nesbitt is joined by a strong ensemble cast including Sarah Parish (Mistresses, Cutting It) as cardiac surgeon Jenny Bremner with Tom Riley (Bouquet of Barbed Wire, Lost in Austen) as anaesthetist Dr Laurence Shepherd.

British journalist and TV specialist Ian Wylie attended the press launch of season 2:

If you liked Monroe the first time around, then you’re going to love series two. Creator and writer Peter Bowker is always a guarantee of top quality drama.
And Monroe is one of the very best things you will see on British television. (…) Monroe is a medical drama that entertains, involves, uplifts, thrills, makes you think and surprises.
If you’ve not seen it before then I recommend you put that right tonight – assuming, of course, that you’re in a part of the world where you can access.

The ITV press pack has a small quote from Andrew on playing Mullery:

Mullery on the surface does not strike you as your typical surgeon…far from! But this second series allows you to see how throughout the hospital he’s actually becoming that little bit more ‘sought after’… And has the respect of his peers!
“With his new mentor and new specialty he’s more likely to speak his mind! And with that I think we discover he’s a surgeon who wears his heart on his sleeve!
“Peter Bowker writes beautiful tragic male characters and Mullery definitely falls into that bracket. Which makes him a pleasure to play!

Dr Mullery’s role at St Matthew’s changed considerably between seasons 1 and 2:

Once Bremner’s cardio trainee, Mullery is now Gillespie’s registrar, specialising in general and vascular surgery. He seems slightly lost in the competitive world of surgery, but his sudden flashes of brilliance suggest that he might one day be an incredible surgeon.

The series was cancelled by ITV after two series on 14 November 2012:

We can confirm that Monroe will not be returning. It has been a fantastic series, which we have been proud to have on the channel, but continuing to refresh our slate is an important part of the creative process for ITV Drama.
