Carnival Row Filming in Dubrovnik Next Month

dubrovnik.jpg

Carnival Row‘s executive producers Travis Beacham and Marc Guggenheim scouted several new locations for filming season 2 of the successful Victorian noir series a month ahead of its season 1 premiere.

Croatia Week now reports that production will come to the picturesque old towns of Dubrovnik and Trsteno to film Carnival Row for 10 days in November 2019.

If the mediterranean town of Dubrovnik looks oddly familiar to you, it’s probably because it has become a very popular filming location and has doubled for example as the cities of King’s Landing and Qarth in the HBO series Game of Thrones as well as the casino city of Canto Bight in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

We are wondering whether this new filming location (season one was exclusively filmed in the Czech Republic, mostly at the Barrandov Studios in Prague) is in some way connected to the Spurnrose storyline which last saw Imogen (Tamzin Merchant) and her lover Agreus (David Gyasi) flee the city of The Burgue from her brother Ezra’s (Andrew Gower) wrath.

FilmNewEurope.com has shared some further information on filming season 2 of Carnival Row in Croatia:

Amazon Studios will be the first major production company to film in the famous Croatian town after the City of Dubrovnik introduced a price list for public spaces. Filmmakers now have to pay up to 6,740 EUR per day for areas larger than 1,000 square meters, such as the one outside the Rector’s Palace in the Old City, where Carnival Row will be filmed.

“For filming locations alone, the City of Dubrovnik will earn between 47,160 and 53,900 EUR from Amazon Studios for Carnival Row,” said Jelka Tepešić, Deputy Mayor of Dubrovnik.

[…] An additional Croatian filming location will be Trsteno Arboretum in the Dubrovnik region. Embassy Films is expected to serve as the local service provider. The producers have applied for incentives through the Filming in Croatia project, which offers a 25% cash rebate for foreign productions and coproductions. […]Tanja Ladović from the Croatian Audiovisual Centre […] confirmed that Carnival Row is on their list for support.

Amazon Studios invested an estimated 1.5 billion CZK (roughly $75 million) on season 1 of Carnival Row, which was one of the most expensive projects to ever shoot in the Czech Republic, and was granted a tax rebate of more than 250 million CZK in return.

ETA (10 October 2019)

Reddit user SRimac has recently reported that the scheduled filming in Croatia in November has been cancelled – or at least post-poned – as the entire Croatian crew has been apparently laid off.

We don’t believe this is a sign that Carnival Row has been cancelled but rather further proof that production is currently on hiatus, possibly to give the new showrunner Erik Oleson and executive story editor Laurie Penny time to view the current material and make any adjustments they deem necessary.

Whether Dubrovnik will still be used as a set for season 2 at a later point is unclear.

Please keep in mind that there is no official confirmation for this and has to be seen as highly speculative.

[SRimac’s original post about Season 2 being cancelled and further comments have been deleted by now. However, the significant lack of “behind the scenes” updates from the Carnival Row cast, especially Orlando Bloom, who regularly shared updates during the filming of Season 1 via his Instagram account, seems to support the theory that production has indeed been halted.]

Exclusive Q&A with Declan O’Dwyer

declanodwyer
Declan O’Dwyer

Declan O’Dwyer, director of the upcoming Miss Scarlet and The Duke, graciously agreed to do this short Q&A exclusively for Andrew-Gower.co.uk. Read what he had to say about the series, working with Andrew Gower and his favourite pizza topping!

The Irish born director, writer and producer previously worked on a number of BBC productions (Robin Hood, Merlin) and directed the original pilot of Being Human. He was a writer and director for the History Channel documentary Barbarians Rising and was nominated for an EMMY award in 2019 for his work on Free Rein. In 2014 Declan O’Dwyer was the first international signing from The Black List. In summer 2019 he directed all 6 episodes of period crime drama Miss Scarlet and The Duke, created by Rachael New and starring Kate Phillips, Stuart Martin and Andrew Gower.

What can fans expect from Miss Scarlet and the Duke? How would you describe the overall tone of the series?

Miss Scarlet and the Duke is the story of the first female detective in Victorian London. Conjured from the mind of Rachael New. The show doesn’t take itself too seriously – but it does expose the prejudices society put on women in the Victorian era and draws many parallels to society today. But, all that said – it is a fun show – with the relationship between Miss Scarlet, and the Duke at its core.

In a comment I read someone saying Miss Scarlet sounds like “Remington Steele in Victorian times”. Would you say this is an appropriate comparison?

Ha! I’d not heard that one. If comparisons have to be drawn (they always will) I would say it’s more like a Victorian Moonlighting. But hey, I loved Remington Steele – and it’s another good reference.

Can you tell us a little about Rupert Parker, the character Andrew Gower is playing? Who is he? And I must add that the moustache is fabulous!

At the moment, I can tell you very little about Rupert Parker I’m afraid. I will say only this, he is a man ‘out of time’ with Victorian London.

Inevitable question: how was working with Andrew Gower?

What’s it like to work with Mr Gower? Well, first and foremost he’s a beautiful human being – so it was always a joy having him on set. He’s a proper laugh to have around – always brought amazing energy. He’s a grafter as well, the consummate, consummate professional. I’d jump through fire to work with him again, any day of the week, twice on Sunday.

Do you have a story about filming that you can share? Something that was especially challenging, something funny that happened, or a favourite set?

Too many to mention. And probably many I can’t, or shouldn’t – in a good way. The schedule was extremely challenging. We shot all six episodes in 51 days. We often had to shoot up to 7 pages a day. That’s very tough on a crew (especially shooting a period piece) but it is especially tough on the actors (imagine memorising 7 pages of dialogue – day in day out). Kate Phillips lead from the front. She was amazing. Always on it. Never complained. (and she’s brilliant in it).

I have to say, despite the schedule pressures (we shot the show in Dublin, doubling for Victorian London) the crew were magnificent and the set was an absolute giggle.

On Miss Scarlet you basically worked with two leading ladies: show creator Rachael New and Kate Phillips, who plays Miss Scarlet.

Haha. Yes! They are one in the same. Miss Scarlet is the very thinly veiled alter ego of Rachael New. It wouldn’t surprise me if Rachael is wearing Miss Scarlet’s costume right now as she writes series two.

Rachael is the creator/Showrunner (she’s in charge basically) and has built this fantastic world for us to play in. Kate brings Eliza Scarlet to life (as Stuart does with The Duke). And they are a really great fun to watch. Their chemistry and relationship is magic. They got on like a house on fire also, so that helps.

But yes – two leading ladies. I consider that an honour.

How do you feel about women taking over and being more and more in control in film business?

I’ve never known it any different to be honest, Isabel. Throughout my career I’ve always worked alongside and for amazing female writers, producers and executives. The change I can see, and it’s a very positive one, is more stories come from the female gaze. And that can only be a good thing.

You’re a director, a writer and a producer. Do you have a preference?

Directing. Hands down. I hate writing. I only ever started writing – because I wasn’t getting offered the kind of scripts I wanted to make. Rather than moan about it – I wrote stuff. I was very fortunate, people liked it. It opened doors in Hollyweird. (Not a typo).

Have you always wanted to be a director?

No, I aways wanted to be a movie star. Not an actor – a movie star. But I can’t act for toffee. Best for everyone that I stay behind the camera – and aim it at people like Andrew Gower.

Is it true that you always wear a tuxedo on the first day of filming?

Yes – the tuxedo thing on the first day is true. Be it in jungle or desert, rain or snow. It harks back to my very first directing gig. It was an in-joke with the crew, about being out at an awards ceremony the night before – and going straight to work.

Eleven years ago, you directed a pilot episode – starring Andrea Riseborough as Ghost Annie – which was later picked up as a TV show which later had Andrew Gower in his breakthrough role, who later starred with Andrea Riseborough in Black Mirror and now you worked with him on Miss Scarlet. Six degrees of Kevin Bacon or does the UK really only have 12 actors?

No, I think the UK only has 7 actors – and Benedict Cumberbatch is 6 of them.

I loved doing the pilot of Being Human. Claire Foy, Andrea Riseborough, Russell Tovey, Guy Flanagan and Adrian Lester, lovely lovely cast and a great script.

Is there a question you always wanted to be asked in an interview but no-one ever thought to ask you?

What’s your favourite pizza? Mine’s a simple Margarita.

Thank you so very much, Mr O’Dwyer, for agreeing to answer our questions. We‘re really excited about Miss Scarlet and the Duke and can‘t wait to see it!

Thank you for asking me to do this. It was fun.

Miss Scarlet and The Duke is scheduled to be released on PBS in the USA in early 2020.

Can watching Poldark change your speech pattern?

Judas; yes!

It does not matter if you are a native English speaker, British, or even Cornish; when you watch Poldark, you need a new set of ears.

After all, it is the authentic feel of Poldark that has seduced audiences all over the world. A bit of jesting with the English grammar is most certainly welcome. Winston Graham made an enormous effort to make the dialogues as close to reality as possible. Not only did he mix with the locals and talked to them to learn the details of their spoken tongue, he developed a linguistic method to capture the mood of the 18th century for Poldark. Every time before attempting to continue with the story, he followed a ritual. He read the great works of the late 18th century writers to exercise his mind. This allowed him to recreate dialogues which would have been heard at that time…

Also reprising his role as Ezra Spurnrose will be Andrew Gower.

We take this picture (shared by Carnival Row creator Travis Beacham on his Instagram) as official confirmation that Andrew Gower will be reprising his role as Ezra Spurnrose in the show’s second season.

Actors already seen on set (or on the way to set) include Cara Delevingne, Orlando Bloom, Tamzin Merchant, David Gyasi, Caroline Ford and Ariyon Bakare.

So far it can only be speculated when new episodes of the fantasy-noir series will be released on Amazon Prime but some time in 2021 seems likely.

After the explosive season 1 finale, what will happen to Philo and Vignette?

[Philo] is a man without a country. […] he’s not human enough for the humans, but he’s not fae enough for the fae. He kind of exists in this sort of status Twilight Zone. Not to mention the fact that, because of this decision, he has relinquished his badge. So this cloak of authority that he used to have is no longer there. […]

When we see Vignette again at the start of season 2, she’s the same character, in very, very, very different circumstances than we left her in. […] don’t forget that Vignette joined the Black Raven in season 1. So without spoiling too much, it’s very safe to say the Black Raven story line is very much Vignette’s story line.

And what’s next for our other star-crossed lovers Imogen and Agreus?

[A]s we’re putting some characters behind the wall, it felt necessary to look outwards with other stories. With Imogen and Agreus, we’re definitely looking outwards, and just from a purely visual standpoint, they’re going to find themselves in some very different environments in season 2. And they’re going to end up in some places that we’ve heard of and are probably curious about.

Will there be more politics?

[T]here’s going to be some sort of geopolitical tensions that are growing, that are sort of unrelated to what’s going on in the ghetto, but will dovetail into Imogen and Agreus’s story, and into what’s going on in Balefire Hall. And just in general in season 2, things get a bit more complex, and we start having a bit more fun with everything.

Read the complete interview here!

So when can we expect to see season 2?

There hasn’t been an official anouncement from Amazon or the showrunners yet but judging by the production schedule season 1 went through a release date for the new episode some time in the first half of 2021 seems plausible.

(Season 1 began filming in September 2017 and was originally supposed to come out in early 2019, even before extensive re-shoots caused the delay.)

Carnival Row: Getting Ready for Season 2

IMG_20190910_173754_671.jpg

All the signs are all pointing in the right direction: season 2 of Carnival Row is coming, and, as they did during the production of season 1, the cast and crew are keeping us updated with Behind the Scenes photos via their social media accounts.

After scouting for some new locations that will be featured in the new season, the cast are starting to arrive at the Barrandov Studios in Prague (Czech Republic), where most of season 1 was filmed.

Andrew Gower‘s involvement in season 2 isn’t confirmed yet but we are rather confident that we haven’t seen the last of his character Ezra Spurnrose.

Breakspear lets Philo go the following morning and promises to have Vignette released as well.

Back in the city, Philo is finally able to uncover the truth about the killings on Carnival Row with the help of the haruspex Aioffe (Alice Krige), and he teams up with Vignette (Cara Delevingne) to go after the Darkasher and the person controlling it.
