Miss Scarlet and The Duke: Trailer

Hollywood Spy have shared the first official trailer for the upcoming period drama Miss Scarlet and The Duke about the first female detective in 19th century London.

Included in the trailer are two small scenes that give a look at Rupert Parker, Andrew Gower‘s character on the show.

Miss Scarlet and The Duke is set to be released in early 2020 on PBS (USA) and Seven (Australia). We will add more information about release dates in other countries as soon as we get it.

Midsomer Murders on BritBox UK

Streaming service BritBox, which was formerly only available in the USA and Canada, has now fully launched in the UK, as a collaboration between the BBC and ITV with additional context by Channel 4 and Channel 5.

Included in your BritBox subscription, set at £5.99 a month, are also the so far unaired episodes of Midsomer Murders‘ latest season, 20×05 “Till Death Do Us Part” and Andrew Gower‘s episode 20×06 “Send in the Clowns”.

According to TV Wise, these episodes “wont air on ITV for several months”. If you don’t want to wait for so long, you can also subscribe to BritBox for free for 30 days, so this might be an option for you.

Carnival Row Soundtrack Coming Soon

Nathan Barr released a teaser of the soundtrack for Carnival Row on his personal Instagram page along with the information that the soundtrack will officially be released in only three days’ time on Friday, 8 November 2019!

Read this interview with the composer where he talks about using “unusual” instruments like a rare Wurlitzer organ and the sound of a human femur in his creation of the beautifully haunting score for the Victorian noir series.

Season 1 of Carnival Row is available on Amazon Prime while the production of season 2 seems to be resuming after it was put on a short hiatus following a change in showrunners. Andrew Gower is confirmed to reprise his role as Ezra Spurnrose.

Further Changes Behind the Scenes of Carnival Row?

It seems like the recent showrunner changes on Carnival Row are still causing some ripple effects which also seems to support the rumours that production of season 2 will be halted to accomodate these changes.

Bleeding Cool reports that the award winning English writer and self-proclaimed “genderqueer feminist” Laurie Penny will come on board as an executive story editor.

“Better known in the UK as a political columnist, author and activist, the Daily Telegraph once called her ‘without doubt the loudest and most controversial female voice on the radical left.’ ” Recently Penny moved to Hollywood to work on television and her credits include Joss Whedon‘s upcoming HBO show The Nevers.

Executive Story Editor is a crew position for a writer in American television. It is a more senior position to Story Editor. […] The responsibilities are similar to that of a story editor. They assist the writing staff in breaking stories up for the season and edit stories and screenplays written for a show.

Also joining the ranks as an executive producer this season is Cara Delevingne, who plays “pansexual fairy” Vignette Stonemoss on the Victorian noir series.

Miss Scarlet and The Duke in Australia

Exciting news for our followers “down under”: Australian network Seven have announced the addition of Miss Scarlet and The Duke to their 2020 schedule at its annual 7Upfronts in Sydney today. No exact date has been given yet for the series, which is expected to air on the American PBS network in 2020, but – as always – we will keep you informed as soon as we find out more!

MISS SCARLET AND THE DUKE
Set in the same 1880s London society that gave rise to Jack the Ripper, this British detective drama features a fearless, independent heroine played by Kate Phillips (Peaky Blinders, The Crown). With her inquisitive mind, Miss Scarlet has always been more interested in running her late father’s detective agency than behaving like a proper lady. But nothing has prepared her for the dangers she is about to face as a woman in the murder investigation trade. From prolific British writer Rachael New comes this fresh crime drama about the first ever female detective in 19th century London. MISS SCARLET AND THE DUKE is produced by Element 8 Entertainment.

According to TV Blackbox, Australian channel 7TWO will show the episodes as double features on Thursdays at 8:30pm, starting on 4 June 2020.

Carnival Row Season 2: Filming To Be Halted To Plan Changes

As previously speculated, a delay in production of season 2 of Carnival Row seems more likely now, after the major shake up that occured earlier this month.

International Business Times states that new showrunner Erik Oleson “may decide on where he wants to take the story.” Screen Rant reports that “the show will take a short break to allow the new showrunner a chance to give his inputs and possibly take the show in a new direction if required”.

This is not the first major behind the scenes change that Carnival Row has gone through.

In January 2015 Amazon Studios signed a development deal for the series with Guillermo del Toro on board as a co-writer, executive producer, and director. Travis Beacham, the writer of the original spec script A Killing on Carnival Row, and TV veteran René Echevarria, were to act as co-creators and executive producers.

In May 2017, production was finally given a series order but at that point del Toro had stepped away from the project due to scheduling conflicts and Paul McGuigan took over from him. However, only 6 months later, McGuigan was replaced by Jon Amiel.

Co-creator Echevarria stayed as showrunner for most of season 1 but this position evenually went to Marc Guggenheim who oversaw the season 1 reshoots.

The recent changes had Guggenheim step down as showrunner to focus on other projects (but he will remain a consultant on the show) and the original creator Travis Beacham leave the project completely due to “creative differences” (he will be still credited as executive producer but in title only).

We can only hope that all these changes will have a solely positive effect on Carnival Row, and that the release of season 2 (expected for summer 2021) will not be delayed too much.

You can catch season 1 of Carnival Row on Amazon Prime (it’s included in your Prime membership or you can sign up for a free trial month) and enjoy Andrew Gower‘s portrayal of Ezra Spurnrose (who is confirmed to reprise his role in season 2).

Miss Scarlet and The Duke is currently being presented at MIPCOM, an annual trade fair held in Cannes (France), and director Declan O’Dwyer as well as show creator Rachael New) took to Instagram to share this first promo poster for the new Victorian crime drama.

It shows the two leads, Kate Phillips (Miss Eliza Scarlet) and Stuart Martin (William “The Duke” Wellington). Sadly missing is Andrew Gower, who plays Rupert Parker, Eliza’s best friend.

Jamie Steinberg interviewed Kate Phillips (who plays the lead on Miss Scarlet and The Duke) for StarryMag about her roles on Downton Abbey and Peaky Blinders. However, her upcoming crime drama set in Victorian London was also mentioned:

Q) What other projects have you been working on?

A) I’ve just wrapped on a project called “Miss Scarlet and the Duke.” A new TV series by A and E that will air on PBS in the new year. It’s a detective show set in Victorian London that follows a young woman, Eliza Scarlet, trying to establish herself as a respected female detective. It’s wonderfully punchy and witty. I can’t wait for people to see it.

Creator Travis Beacham leaves Carnival Row, Erik Oleson joins as Showrunner

Deadine.com reports some major “behind-the-scenes” changes on Carnival Row which recently started filming its second season in Prague (Czech Republic).

Showrunner Travis Beacham is exiting the show due to “creative differences” in a mutual decision with Amazon Studios. Beacham, on whose original spec script A Killing On Carnival Row the show is based, also co-created the show with René Echevarria, who was the drama’s original showrunner and was replaced during the season 1 re-shoots by Marc Guggenheim. Guggenheim is now also stepping down from the day-to-day business of running Carnival Row and handing over the reins to new showrunner Erik Oleson.

According to Deadline.com “the plan is for filming to continue during the showrunner changeover. The series may go on a brief hiatus to give Oleson time to examine the existing scripts and outlines and put his own stamp on them. That is not expected to impact the timeline for when Season 2 will be available on Prime Video.”

New showrunner Eric Oleson signed an overall contract with Amazon Studios earlier this year. His previous credits include the much praised third season of Netflix’s Daredevil (showrunner) and Amazon Prime’s The Man in the High Castle (head writer, executive producer).

We hope this change will only have a positive effect on Carnival Row, whose first season was a big success with fans but received very mixed reviews from critics.

Miss Scarlet & The Duke at MIPCOM

According to a tweet from Video Age International, Miss Scarlet and The Duke will be presented at MIPCOM (Marché International des Programmes de Communication, English: International Market of Communications Programmes), an annual trade show held in Cannes (France) from 14 – 17 October 2019, which is mainly used by representatives of television studios and broadcasters to buy and sell new programmes for international distribution.

The news come with the above promotional still of the two main characters played by Kate Phillips (Miss Eliza Scarlet) and Stuart Martin (William “The Duke” Wellington) after the cast and crew entertained us with a series of photos from the set of Miss Scarlet during the summer.

Andrew Gower will play Rupert Parker, Miss Scarlet’s “BFF” (according to show creator Rachael New) and “a man ‘out of time’ with Victorian London“.

In their MIPCOM Spotlight for A+E International, WorldScreen.com quote Moreyba Bidessie, director of international scripted development and sales at A+E Networks:

“Miss Scarlet and The Duke is in post-production, having filmed all through the summer, and it’s exciting for us to start showing buyers how it’s looking. […] We are so hugely proud of the show—our first original scripted show from A+E Networks International.”
