Monroe 2×01

Eighteen months have passed since the events of the season 1 finale and a lot has changed at the fictional St Matthew’s Hospital. cardiothoracic surgeon Jenny Bremner (Sarah Parish) now has a baby with anaesthetist Lawrence Shepherd (Tom Riley), there’s a new Head of Clinical Services Alistair Gillespie (Neil Pearson) and Andrew Mullery (Andrew Gower) has transferred to general surgery and is now a registrar.

Changing his specialty has also given a boost of confidence to Mullery, who is now a much more accepted member of staff at the hospital and has become friends with fellow registrar Sarah Witney (Christina Chong). Together with trainees Daniel Springer (Luke Allen-Gale) and Kitty Wilson (Michelle Asante), they have formed a close-knit circle much like the older doctors.

On her first day back at work after maternity leave, Bremner is torn between her guilt as a young mother leaving her baby in the care of a stranger and feeling sidelined after being out of her job for so long. Dr Monroe (James Nesbitt) still struggles with accepting all the differences at work, when his son announces his engagement to girlfriend Donna (Karla Crome).

Monroe season 2 starts tonight (Monday 1 October) on ITV at 9pm. There have been lots of previews in the press today and everything we’ve seen has been hugely positive.

The Telegraph says that Monroe “returns with renewed vigour and trolley-loads of whip-sharp dialogue” while the Metro calls it “a slick and enjoyable drama”. GQ pushes aside the “House comparisons”, saying that “when it started last year, [it] drew understandable comparisons to the recently-departed House… Thankfully, Monroe has developed into a compelling drama – primarily thanks to James Nesbitt’s confidence in the lead role.”

Journalist Ian Wylie has today posted a transcript of the recent press launch for Monroe on his website, you can read it here.

James Nesbitt, Tracy Ann Oberman, Sarah Parish and Neil Pearson appeared on Daybreak this morning to talk about the new series, you can watch it again on ITV Player; it’s around 1 hour 37 minutes in. Sarah Parish also appeared on This Morning around 11.45am, which you can watch again here.

Murdoch Mysteries Season 6 preview

A preview of season six of Murdoch Mysteries has been added to the MIP ITV website, with a short video and an overview of the season.

In series six of the one-hour drama, Detective Murdoch tries to clear the name of a young Winston Churchill after his visit to Canada goes awry; a dangerous madman threatens to unleash a deadly toxic gas attack; and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle makes an appearance when his supposedly fictional creation, Detective Sherlock Holmes, becomes entangled in a violent robbery.

We know from Andrew Gower‘s Spotlight CV and his agent’s website that he has filmed the part of Sherlock Holmes – fingers crossed it won’t be too long before we see some video of the part.

You can see the preview video and read more here.

The lovely ladies at Omnia, a free online zine, have included an article about Andrew Gower in their latest edition.

He’s very unassuming, small and skinny and rather awkward, but he’s an excellent actor, very emotive and funny, and absolutely deserving of everything good that comes his way.

You said it Daisy and Nancy!
