Carnival Row: Philo’s and Vignette’s Story

cr_philo086.png

For everyone not being able to attend San Diego Comic Con this weekend, Amazon Prime have released two brand new trailers for their upcoming fantasy series Carnival Row, giving us a more detailed look into this new world and its two main characters, Vignette Stonemoss (Cara Delevingne) and Rycroft Philostrate (Orlando Bloom).

The eight-part series, from René Echevarria, Travis Beacham and Legendary Television, is set in a Victorian fantasy world filled with mythological immigrant creatures whose exotic homelands were invaded by the empires of man. The growing population struggles to coexist with humans — forbidden to live, love, or fly with freedom. But even in darkness, hope lives, as a human detective, Rycroft Philostrate (Bloom), and a refugee faerie named Vignette Stonemoss (Delevingne) rekindle a dangerous affair despite an increasingly intolerant society. Vignette harbors a secret that endangers Philo’s world during his most important case yet: a string of gruesome murders threatening the uneasy peace of the Row. […]

David Gyasi, Karla Crome, Indira Varma, Tamzin Merchant and Simon McBurney also star, and Andrew Gower and Jamie Harris recur.

Carnival Row will launch in a world wide release on 30 August 2019 on Amazon Prime.

Amazon Prime is promoting its annual Amazon Prime Day and its Amazon Music subscription service with a special concert featuring Taylor Swift on Wednesday 10 July 2019. Prime Members can watch the concert, which will take place in an unknown location in New York City, live at 9:00pm ET (2:00am BST / 3:00am CET). It will also be available to Prime members to stream on-demand after the live show for a limited time with select songs from each performance.

The two-hour special will also feature live performances by Dua Lipa, SZA, and Becky G. The “Prime Day Concert” will be hosted by comedian-actress Jane Lynch.

Why is this important to us?

During the 2019 Prime Day Concert, Amazon will promote “Carnival Row,” the upcoming Amazon original fantasy drama series starring Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne, slated to premiere Aug. 30.

(Source: Variety)

Let’s hope Amazon Prime will not only make parts of the concert available to watch later on but also the (presumably) new material they’re releasing for Carnival Row, and hopefully it will give us a first look at Andrew Gower as Ezra Spurnrose!

ETA:

In addition to the concert in New York City, there will also be concerts in London (UK) featuring Rita Ora on 10 July 7:45pm at a “secret location in East London” and at “Muffathalle” in Munich (Germany) with performances by Die Fantastischen Vier and Clueso on Tuesday 9 July 2019 at 6:00pm (CET).

The majority of tickets to the event are being reserved exclusively for Prime members who are invited to enter the competition from today for a chance to win a pair at www.amazon.co.uk/primedayparty. There will also be a limited number of tickets at the door on the day – available to everyone on a first come, first served basis.

The same promotional content for Amazon Prime’s upcoming and returning series, including Carnival Row, is expected during the live streaming of both concerts.

German Release Date for Carnival Row

The German website film.tv has some new information on Carnival Row, Andrew’s upcoming fantasy series.

According to film.tv, Amazon Prime will release a German dubbed version on their streaming platform on Friday, 22 November 2019 after the world wide release of the English original on Friday, 30 August 2019.

Their news article also gives some additional clues about Ezra Spurnrose, Andrew’s character:

Andrew Gower (Outlander – Die Highland Saga) als Ezra Spurnose, der neurotische Sohn eines wohlhabenden Uhrmachers, der kürzlich das Vermögen seines verstorbenen Vaters bei dem gefährliche Unternehmen verzockt hat, Wanderarbeiter aus den Heimatländern der Feen zu überführen

(Source: film.tv)

Translation:

Andrew Gower (Outlander) plays Ezra Spurnrose, the neurotic son of a prosperous watchmaker, who’s lately gambled his deceased father’s fortune on the considerably more risky enterprise of ferrying migrant workers from the fae homelands.

Ezra sounds more and more like a great character for Andrew to play, doesn’t he?

Carnival Row in Final Editing

According to actor Ryan Hayes‘s Instagram, who will play Constable Hatch in Andrew‘s upcoming fantasy-noir series Carnival Row, the Amazon Prime production is in its final stages! The actor was called in for an ADR (automated dialogue replacement) session which is usually done towards the end of the editing and post-production process.

Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne will star in the series that is scheduled to be released later this year.

With his roles in the upcoming final season of Poldark, Carnival Row and his guest appearance on Midsomer Murders, fans of Andrew Gower really have a lot to look forward to this year!

Is Carnival Row the new Game of Thrones?

carnival-row_cdob

Is Carnival Row the new Game of Thrones? WMagazine thinks so!

In their article, they make a strong case for it:

[U]nlike Thrones, Carnival Row will take place in a vaguely futuristic city (albeit with Victorian-era touches, in a steampunk sort of way), and instead of ongoing wars and battle scenes, it will instead take on the form of a neo-noir mystery. Still, there’s not only enough that appears to be in the show’s DNA (including magical creatures and scheming members of a ruling upper class) to hook Thrones fans, but a few familiar faces from the Thrones cast will appear as well (in addition to veterans of the Outlander, Star Trek, Star Wars, and Misfits franchises).

What is Carnival Row even about?

Essentially, it’s a fantasy series about the tensions of an immigration crisis.

It all takes place in the “neo-Victorian” city of Burgue, a city dominated by humans, but tensions emerge when magical creatures like elves and faeries start fleeing to the city as refugees once war breaks out in their homeland. As seems to be unfortunately natural to humans, they don’t react too kindly to the outsiders. To make matters worse, a bunch of the newly arrived faeries end up murdered, including at least one faerie showgirl in the part of the city known as the titular “Carnival Row.” Most of the humans don’t really seem to care until a lone detective decides to take up the case. [Orlando] Bloom plays that detective, named Rycroft Philostrate, while [Cara] Delevingne plays a faerie known as Vignette Stonemoss.[…]

Who else is in the cast?

Indira Varma [Ellaria Sand, Game of Thrones] plays Piety Breakspear, who is described as “the regal and cunning matriarch of the powerful family that rules the city of the Burgue.” […]

Misfits vet Karla Crome plays another faerie with a gift for poetry who is forced to work in a brothel to survive.

Our Andrew Gower gets a mention, too!

[…] Tamzin Merchant [Running Naked, Ark], the actress who was originally cast as Daenerys in Throne‘s ill-fated original pilot episode, also has a major role.

Merchant (Salem) and Andrew Gower (Outlander) play brother and sister Imogen and Ezra Spurnrose. They hail from a wealthy family that’s falling on tough times, so they enter a business deal with a “Puck” who has moved across the street. And, in a bit of a taboo move, Imogen may or may not be falling in love with that Puck.

New Writer for Carnival Row

carnival_row_chairc

Good news as a second season of Carnival Row seems more and more likely to happen – as incredible as it sounds with so little information about season 1.

Only a few months away from the 10th anniversary of the Battlestar Galactica finale airing, actress Tricia Helfer presents a podcast called “Battlestar GalactiCast” in which she revisists episodes of the show with her co-host, journalist and writer Marc Bernadin.

In their latest editon, Marc Bernadin now revealed that he most recently joined the writing team for Carnival Row, which – he says – comes to Amazon Video “at some point later this year”. Assuming season 1 is well into post-production by now, this can only mean the team is already busy with developing the next season.

Of course, there is no way of confirming whether Andrew will renew his role as Ezra Spurnrose for another season but we feel this is a strong indicator that the producers at Amazon Video feel very confident about their new series.

You can listen to the “Battlestar GalactiCast” Season 1 Episode 12 on Spotify:
