William “The Duke” Wellington (Stuart Martin) is on his way to an important meeting with Superintendent Stirling (Nick Dunning) and other division heads of Scotland Yard when a distress calls reaches him: Miss Scarlet (Kate Phillips) has gone missing. Eliza’s canny housekeeper Ivy (Cathy Belton) has already undertaken some investigating of her own and is sure that something untoward has happened.

Rupert Parker (Andrew Gower) is the last person to have seen Eliza and he is entertaining German undertaker Herr Hildegard (Richard Evans) and his “radiant niece” Tilly (Amy McAllister) – who he is eager to impress – when William arrives to inquire about Eliza’s whereabouts. The late Henry Scarlet’s (Kevin Doyle) old case book finally leads William to the seeminly empty Woolwich Prison.

Reunited with Eliza the two soon discover that an abandoned gaol is also a perfect hideout for a gang of criminals. But what is Henry Scarlet’s connection to the gang and who is the mysterious prisoner in Cell 99? This case is soon turning into a most personal one for the dynamic duo and test for their resolve. The culprits this time might be closer to them then they think.

After last week’s case, Eliza Scarlet (Kate Phillips) is disappointed to find out that Scotland Yard’s DI William “The Duke” Wellington (Stuart Martin) has claimed all credit for solving the case for himself. Her friend and business partner Rupert Parker (Andrew Gower) is likewise disappointed that his investment is not mentioned as this would have surely vexed his mother (Helen Norton). When German undertaker Herr Hildegard (Richard Evans) approaches Eliza in the street, she tries to brush him off, but becomes more interested when he mentions a potential new case.

James Henderson (Hugh O’Conor) is a “death photographer“, who specializes in capturing the images of the recently deceased for their loved ones, a custom that was weirdly popular in Victorian time where people were obsessed with death and the afterlife. James himself is now receiving threatening messages from beyond the grave after he got engaged to his daugher’s governess Amelia (Roisin Murphy). Is the ghost of James’ dead wife Violet (Amelie Metcalfe) trying to take revenge or is Amalia’s mother Edith (Marion O’Dwyer), a psychic, behind the mysterious postcards?

William gets a taste of what it feels like to be overlooked and prejudiced against in his chosen profession for himself while he must deal with the nosy journalist Jacob Bunce (Kevin Eldon). Rupert ponders the idea of giving in to his mother’s pressure and get married, if for appearances only. After Eliza laughs at his suggestion, she is surprised to see him pursuing a different prospect very quickly, but a discovery in her father’s (Kevin Doyle), former office distracts her and makes her question the circumstances of his sudden death.

It’s been a couple of weeks since Eliza Scarlet (Kate Phillips) has opened her own private detective ageny and things are not going quite as hoped for. Not many people in 19th century London are willing to hire a female detective. During her first monthly meeting with her financier Rupert Parker (Andrew Gower), who proudly presents her to his friend Dr Moorhouse (Kieran Hodgson), she has to admit she can’t pay the agreed rate.

Tabitha Butler’s (Deirdre Mullins) husband Edward (David Crowley) was found at the scene of a murder with the murder weapon his his hand. Tabitha hires Eliza to prove her husband’s innocence despite his confession. During her investigation she once again crosses paths with Jamaican bouncer Moses (Ansu Kabia) while The Duke tries his best to discourage Eliza from continuing on her “foolish” endeavour.

Eliza’s skills of deduction lead her back to Rupert, who takes a great risk by confiding a big secret to her, but the realization that they are both outsiders in a Victorian world, strengthens their bond and friendship. In the end even the Duke has to reluctantly acknowledge Eliza’s abilities are an asset, and a new business partner will help take care of her clients’ poor payment behaviour.

Miss Scarlet and The Duke 1×01 Inheritance

Brought up by her widowed father Henry (Kevin Doyle), Eliza Scarlet (Kate Phillips) is an educated, headstrong young woman living in Victorian London. When her father suddenly dies, she is left penniless and forced to pick up Henry’s business and become London’s first female detective in a time where women had little to no rights at all. Reluctantly she teams up with her father’s former protégé, Scotland Yard Detective Inspector William “The Duke” Wellington (Stuart Martin).

Eliza’s first client introduces himself as Alfred Winters (Aidan McArdle) who hopes to see his niece, Clara Simms (Ellise Chappell), one last time before he dies. Clara had eloped with her scoundrel husband and is now believed to work in Soho as a chorus girl. Despite the dangers the streets of London hold for a woman alone at night, Eliza manages to find Clara and arrange a meeting with her uncle. Belatedly, Eliza realizes she has made a grave mistake and vows to correct it.

Back at her house, Eliza finds a visitor in her parlour. Rupert Parker (Andrew Gower) is a wealthy young man, whose domineering mother (Helen Norton) is extremely displeased about her only son’s unmarried status and forces him to propose to Eliza. Clearly terrified of his mother, Rupert confides in Eliza that he doesn’t want to be married. The two bond over the fact that they both crave independence and quickly discover that there is a different way for them to form a partnership.

Ferabbee’s Circus has come to Swynton Magna, the village in Midsomer County where Joe (Jason Watkins), the owner of the circus, grew up with his now estranged brother Curtis (Neil Stuke), who still lives in the village. Soon after the arrival, evil clown sightings are not only scaring the inhabitants of Swynton Magna but Inspector Barnaby (Neil Dudgeon) must also face one of his biggest fears.

Not all that glitters is gold at Ferabbee’s – the circus is in deep financial trouble. Harry (Andrew Gower), Joe’s son, has plans to modernize the acts but his ideas fall on deaf ears, and clown Groucho (Kevin Eldon) wants to take on a better offer and leave the circus. The pressure is high on the remaining circus staff  when things take a turn for the worse, and one of their own is killed in the circus ring.

Inspector Barnaby, his partner DS Jamie Winter (Nick Hendrix) and pathologist Fleur Perkins (Annette Badland) have their work cut out for them as the list of suspects is long and everyone in Swynton Magna has their dark secrets: who is Curtis’ attractive wife Freya (Lorraine Burroughs) having an affair with and what is going on in young Mostyn Cartwright’s (Andrew Knott) basement?

Philo (Orlando Bloom) finds himself at a manor outside the city facing Absalom Breakspear (Jared Harris), who thinks Philo is the murderer of  Aisling Querelle (Erika Stárková). When his attempt to shoot Philo fails, the two start talking and their conversation brings a few surprising revelations for both of them. Breakspear lets Philo go the following morning and promises to have Vignette released as well.

After her night with Agreus (David Gyasi), Imogen (Tamzin Merchant) returns to the Spurnrose house in the morning and a suspicous Ezra (Andrew Gower) tells her that he would go away for the day to inspect his new ship, the “Swan”. Imogen uses his absence to sneak back into Agreus’ house and they continue their affair. However, they are observed by Ezra, who confronts them and threatens Agreus with a gun.

Jonah Breakspear (Arty Froushan) is in for a few unexpected turns of events himself as not everything he has been made to believe all his life turns out to be true. Back in the city, Philo is finally able to uncover the truth about the killings on Carnival Row with the help of the haruspex Aioffe (Alice Krige), and he teams up with Vignette (Cara Delevingne) to go after the Darkasher and the person controlling it.

After being arrested, Philo (Orlando Bloom) is put in a cell with human prisoners who are told he’s a half-blood. Vignette (Cara Delevingne), who was previously put in the fae cell next to him, warms him about an attack by his fellow inmates and he is able to fight them off. Philo admits that the murdered fae singer Aisling was his mother. He and Vignette finally declare their love for each other, just before Philo is transferred to another location.

After Imogen (Tamzin Merchant) and Mr Agreus (David Gyasi) return after the auction, Imogen finds her brother Ezra (Andrew Gower) aggravated and upset over the arrest in their own home and after he learned that their father once gave refuge to a pregnant pix. He promises his sister that he will negotiate an end of her obligations to Agreus, but Imogen doesn’t seem too happy about it.

Later Ezra and Agreus meet to discuss business, and Ezra inquires about Agreus’ past as as a skipjack, a kind of bounty hunter for escaped indentured fae, and questions his morality. Afterwards Ezra tells Imogen he good news that they might be able to sever their ties with Agreus sooner than expected but Imogen reacts rather disappointed. She observes Agreus’ house and decides to give him a late night visit.

The murder of Dr Morange (Gregory Gudgeon), a known and well liked member of The Burgue, is causing a lot of talk amongst its citizens. Erza Spurnrose (Andrew Gower) is visibly shaken by the news when he informs his sister about the death of their father’s friend. Constable Berwick (Waj Ali) and Sergeant Dombey (Jamie Harris) decide to start their own investigations which eventually lead them both to the person who is the link between all murder victims.

Sophie Longerbane (Caroline Ford) is receiving mourners after the death of her father in parliament. Intrigued, Jonah Breakspear (Arty Froushan) observes her from the gallery and the two start talking after Sophie realizes he was spying on her. Jonah is clearly fascinated by the young and ambitious woman who seems to relish his attention. When they part, Sophie tells him that they are very much alike, but that he is still under his parents’ thumb.

Vignette (Cara Delevingne) breaks into a museum exhibiting fae artefacts from the library where she used to work in Tirnanoc, the homeland of the fae. She is arrested and taken into police custody just as Imogen Spurnrose (Tamzin Merchant) and Mr Agreus (David Gyasi) arrive to attend an auction. The unlike couple causes some heads to turn but after some initial nervousness, they are surprised to discover that they actually enjoy each other’s company.

Carnival Row 1×05 Grieve No More

In the Spurnrose household, Imogen (Tamzin Merchant) decides to take matters into her own hands. She’s invited Mr Agreus (David Gyasi) and some of her high society friends for tea and in exchange the wealthy puck will invest in Ezra’s (Andrew Gower) next business venture. Ezra is appalled at the idea but is left with no choice.

Piety Breakspear (Indira Varma) blames Jonah’s reckless behaviour for his abduction and reminds him of the sacrifices she has made for him and his prophesized future. Later Jonah (Arty Froushan) accompanies his father to parliament to see the deceased Longerbane’s daughter, Sophie (Caroline Ford), take his seat until the next election.

Investigating two murders now, Philo (Orlando Bloom) is returning to the orphanage where he grew up and is haunted by childhood memories. Trying to uncover the truth about the gruesome deaths turns more and more into an quest into Philo’s own past. In the meantime, Vignette (Cara Delevingne) settles into her new life on Carnival Row.

Carnival Row 1×04 The Joining of Unlike Things

There has been another gruesome murder on Carnival Row: the headmaster of the orphanage, where Philo (Orlando Bloom) grew up, has been killed by a strange creature. While Philo is investigating the case, he encounters the killer in the sewers of The Burgue but the monster is able to get away. Philo later learns that the creature is a Darkasher, a golem made from body parts and reanimated with dark magic. Sceptical that such a thing is possible, he turns to the Haruspex (Alice Krige) for proof.

Ezra (Andrew Gower) apologizes to his sister Imogen (Tamzin Merchant) for his harsh words over breakfast and then leaves to meet the family’s solicitor. Once he is out of the house, Imogen prepares to receive Mr Agreus (David Gyasi). She hopes to use his desire to be accepted into (human) society by getting him to invest into her brother’s endeavours but the wealthy Puck isn’t as gullible as Imogen might have thought and misinterprets her intentions.

Dahlia (Chloe Pirrie), leader of The Black Raven, suspects Vignette (Cara Delevingne) is informing on them to the police. To prove her innocence, Vignette must find the real traitor and is forced to confront him, which puts her into a great deal of danger.

Ritter Longerbane (Ronan Vibert) is taken into custody for the abduction of Jonah Breakspear (Arty Froushan) and attacked by the boy’s distraught father, who doesn’t believe in Longerbane’s innocence. The real kidnapper uses this chance to kill Longerbane and reveal the place where Jonah is held so he can be rescued by the police. After arriving back at home, Jonah realizes who the person was that held him hostage.
