Outlander 2×02 Not in Scotland Anymore

The historic-fiction drama Outlander is focused on time-travelling WW2 combat nurse Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe) and her 18th century Highland warrior husband Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan). In season 2 they are trying to change history and stop the Jacobite rising of 1745 and the devastating Battle of Cullodon from happening.

The Frasers have just arrived in Paris and are still settling into their new lives when Jamie receives a surprise invitation to meet Prince Charles Edward Stuart (Andrew Gower) in a rather unusual location. The Young Pretender to the British throne is in Paris to raise enough money to support an army.

However, this is easier said than done as the Bonnie Prince is “incognito” in France and can’t be received at court. He needs the help of someone who can negotiate on his behalf with the French Minister of Finance Joseph Duverney (Marc Duret) – and who would be better suited to the task than a loyal Scotsman like Jamie Fraser?

Capital Episode 2

When the ‘We Want What You Have’ campaign takes a nasty turn for the worse, the residents of Pepys Road demand greater action from the police. But whilst DI Mill (Bryan Dick) searches for a breakthrough, other forces continue to transform the fortunes of many of the road’s inhabitants.

Returning home after her Christmas sojourn, Arabella (Rachael Stirling) is troubled to discover that Roger (Toby Jones) is refusing to fall into line – and worse, rather than getting the house in order himself, he’s hired the attractive Matya (Zrinka Cvitesic) to help with the kids. At a banquet, Mark (Andrew Gower) reveals his own interest in Matya but is again dismissed by a jealous Roger.

Meanwhile, Petunia’s (Gemma Jones) health continues to deteriorate, causing Smitty (Robert Emms) to reveal a big secret to his ailing grandmother. But her sickness doesn’t mean that old resentments are just swept away, and Mary (Lesley Sharp) is left struggling to cope with the decline in her mother’s health.

When the Kamal brothers learn that their mother Mrs Kamal (Shabana Azmi) is planning to visit, Shahid (Danny Ashok) hatches a plan to finally get rid of Iqbal (Tom Reed). Elsewhere, Bogdan’s (Radoslaw Kaim) womanising causes difficulties between him and Piotr (Krystian Godlewski), and Mashinko (Kobna Holdbrook-Smith) is desperate to learn of the fate that has befallen Quentina (Wunmi Mosaku). *

Capital Press Review

capital-shinnie

Here’s what some critics had to say about Capital, the TV adaptation of John Lanchaster‘s novel of the same title.

Andrew plays the character of Mark, who is not mentioned in the reviews but thanks to The Independent we got this lovely production still of Andrew and Toby Jones who plays Mark’s boss Roger.

Like the novel, Capital is more of a character-driven drama than a compelling crime thriller. It is a gentle satire about human behaviour, values and relationships. […] the drama is a pleasing adaptation that brings life to lovable characters, with strong performances from the ensemble cast.

(Source: The Independent)

How much of a city of 8.5 million can you get into one south London street? Capital (BBC1), adapted from John Lanchester’s novel, manages a lot. […] A lot of the important stuff, as well as what is most wonderful and most terrible about the place.

(Source: The Guardian)

Much was expected of John Lanchester’s 2012 novel Capital, which explored the London property bubble through the residents of Pepys Road, a gentrified Clapham street. […] But it’s the acting that makes this production sing. There was not a bad performance among the large ensemble cast and each brought something very different.

(Source: Telegraph)

as you expect from Bowker (writer of the Bafta-winning Marvellous), there is a fierce intelligence at work here, a script which asks some very interesting and important questions but doesn’t force the answers down your throat.

Capital Ep 01

CA01x32

Capital Episode 1

To the outside world, the residents of Pepys Road have it all. House prices have rocketed, creating a street of multi-million pound homes… However, life’s other problems don’t go away just because you’ve won the property lottery.

Petunia (Gemma Jones) is growing increasingly worried that her dizzy spells don’t seem to be going away, but doesn’t want to turn to her daughter Mary (Lesley Sharp) for help. Meanwhile, Roger (Toby Jones), banker and supposed family man, is hoping that this year’s bonus might bring him and his wife Arabella (Rachael Stirling) happiness – or at least be able to cover the cost of Bogdan (Radoslaw Kaim) and all the renovations he’s been doing on the house. Mark (Andrew Gower), Roger’s young and ambitious assistant at the bank, takes matters into his own hands when his ideas aren’t met with approval.

Elsewhere, local shopkeeper Ahmed (Adeel Akhtar) is hoping that his brothers Shahid (Danny Ashok) and Usman (Hamza Jeetooa) might finally start to take some responsibility and make something of their lives. While Quentina (Wunmi Mosaku), traffic warden and asylum seeker, is just looking to keep her head down – while being abused by the Pepys Road residents she is ticketing. All of this is watched by the successful but secretive Smitty (Robert Emms), an artist who shares his own personal connection to Pepys Road.

Normal life on a normal street. At least, that is, until a mysterious note bearing the words ‘we want what you have’ is dropped through every letterbox. Who has sent the message? And are they still watching the residents? Before long, the ripples caused by the note will have touched every corner of the community – and the residents of Pepys Road will see their lives transformed. *

Black Work Episode 03

In the third and final episode of Black Work, Andrew Gower reprises his role as DC Jared Ansell, a member of the taskforce who investigate the murder of Ryan Gillespie, police officer Jo Gillespie’s husband.

Devastated to discover that Ryan (Kenny Doughty) had bought the cottage for his mistress of three years and their child, Jo Gillespie (Sheridan Smith) is also told that Parry’s (Ben-Ryan Davies) girlfriend Sian was murdered just before Ryan was slain.

She tracks down Ryan’s handler Tom Piper (Phil Davis), who tells her that Sian blew Ryan’s cover and Chief Constable Jarecki (Geraldine James) was aware of this but did not pull him out of the operation.

A paranoid Jo is now suspicious of all her police colleagues, particularly her former lover Jack (Matthew McNulty), who appears to be far less innocent than she thought. *
