Carnival Row Season 2: Filming To Be Halted To Plan Changes

As previously speculated, a delay in production of season 2 of Carnival Row seems more likely now, after the major shake up that occured earlier this month.

International Business Times states that new showrunner Erik Oleson “may decide on where he wants to take the story.” Screen Rant reports that “the show will take a short break to allow the new showrunner a chance to give his inputs and possibly take the show in a new direction if required”.

This is not the first major behind the scenes change that Carnival Row has gone through.

In January 2015 Amazon Studios signed a development deal for the series with Guillermo del Toro on board as a co-writer, executive producer, and director. Travis Beacham, the writer of the original spec script A Killing on Carnival Row, and TV veteran René Echevarria, were to act as co-creators and executive producers.

In May 2017, production was finally given a series order but at that point del Toro had stepped away from the project due to scheduling conflicts and Paul McGuigan took over from him. However, only 6 months later, McGuigan was replaced by Jon Amiel.

Co-creator Echevarria stayed as showrunner for most of season 1 but this position evenually went to Marc Guggenheim who oversaw the season 1 reshoots.

The recent changes had Guggenheim step down as showrunner to focus on other projects (but he will remain a consultant on the show) and the original creator Travis Beacham leave the project completely due to “creative differences” (he will be still credited as executive producer but in title only).

We can only hope that all these changes will have a solely positive effect on Carnival Row, and that the release of season 2 (expected for summer 2021) will not be delayed too much.

Creator Travis Beacham leaves Carnival Row, Erik Oleson joins as Showrunner

Deadine.com reports some major “behind-the-scenes” changes on Carnival Row which recently started filming its second season in Prague (Czech Republic).

Showrunner Travis Beacham is exiting the show due to “creative differences” in a mutual decision with Amazon Studios. Beacham, on whose original spec script A Killing On Carnival Row the show is based, also co-created the show with René Echevarria, who was the drama’s original showrunner and was replaced during the season 1 re-shoots by Marc Guggenheim. Guggenheim is now also stepping down from the day-to-day business of running Carnival Row and handing over the reins to new showrunner Erik Oleson.

According to Deadline.com “the plan is for filming to continue during the showrunner changeover. The series may go on a brief hiatus to give Oleson time to examine the existing scripts and outlines and put his own stamp on them. That is not expected to impact the timeline for when Season 2 will be available on Prime Video.”

New showrunner Eric Oleson signed an overall contract with Amazon Studios earlier this year. His previous credits include the much praised third season of Netflix’s Daredevil (showrunner) and Amazon Prime’s The Man in the High Castle (head writer, executive producer).

We hope this change will only have a positive effect on Carnival Row, whose first season was a big success with fans but received very mixed reviews from critics.

Carnival Row Filming in Dubrovnik Next Month

Carnival Row‘s executive producers Travis Beacham and Marc Guggenheim scouted several new locations for filming season 2 of the successful Victorian noir series a month ahead of its season 1 premiere.

Croatia Week now reports that production will come to the picturesque old towns of Dubrovnik and Trsteno to film Carnival Row for 10 days in November 2019.

If the mediterranean town of Dubrovnik looks oddly familiar to you, it’s probably because it has become a very popular filming location and has doubled for example as the cities of King’s Landing and Qarth in the HBO series Game of Thrones as well as the casino city of Canto Bight in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

We are wondering whether this new filming location (season one was exclusively filmed in the Czech Republic, mostly at the Barrandov Studios in Prague) is in some way connected to the Spurnrose storyline which last saw Imogen (Tamzin Merchant) and her lover Agreus (David Gyasi) flee the city of The Burgue from her brother Ezra’s (Andrew Gower) wrath.

FilmNewEurope.com has shared some further information on filming season 2 of Carnival Row in Croatia:

Amazon Studios will be the first major production company to film in the famous Croatian town after the City of Dubrovnik introduced a price list for public spaces. Filmmakers now have to pay up to 6,740 EUR per day for areas larger than 1,000 square meters, such as the one outside the Rector’s Palace in the Old City, where Carnival Row will be filmed.

“For filming locations alone, the City of Dubrovnik will earn between 47,160 and 53,900 EUR from Amazon Studios for Carnival Row,” said Jelka Tepešić, Deputy Mayor of Dubrovnik.

[…] An additional Croatian filming location will be Trsteno Arboretum in the Dubrovnik region. Embassy Films is expected to serve as the local service provider. The producers have applied for incentives through the Filming in Croatia project, which offers a 25% cash rebate for foreign productions and coproductions. […]Tanja Ladović from the Croatian Audiovisual Centre […] confirmed that Carnival Row is on their list for support.

Amazon Studios invested an estimated 1.5 billion CZK (roughly $75 million) on season 1 of Carnival Row, which was one of the most expensive projects to ever shoot in the Czech Republic, and was granted a tax rebate of more than 250 million CZK in return.

Reddit user SRimac has recently reported that the scheduled filming in Croatia in November has been cancelled – or at least post-poned – as the entire Croatian crew has been apparently laid off.

We don’t believe this is a sign that Carnival Row has been cancelled but rather further proof that production is currently on hiatus, possibly to give the new showrunner Erik Oleson and executive story editor Laurie Penny time to view the current material and make any adjustments they deem necessary.

Whether Dubrovnik will still be used as a set for season 2 at a later point is unclear.

Please keep in mind that there is no official confirmation for this and has to be seen as highly speculative.

Ezra is back for Carnival Row S2

We take this picture (shared by Carnival Row creator Travis Beacham on his Instagram) as official confirmation that Andrew Gower will be reprising his role as Ezra Spurnrose in the show’s second season.

Actors already seen on set (or on the way to set) include Cara Delevingne, Orlando Bloom, Tamzin Merchant, David Gyasi, Caroline Ford and Ariyon Bakare.

So far it can only be speculated when new episodes of the fantasy-noir series will be released on Amazon Prime but some time in 2021 seems likely.

Carnival Row Season 2 – What we know so far

Pre-production for season 2 of Carnival Row is well underway but what – and when! – can we expect to find out what’s in store for our favourite characters.

Showrunners Travis Beacham and Marc Guggenheim have recently teased a few details in an interview with Tyler Aquilina (Entertainment Weekly).

After the explosive season 1 finale, what will happen to Philo and Vignette?

[Philo] is a man without a country. […] he’s not human enough for the humans, but he’s not fae enough for the fae. He kind of exists in this sort of status Twilight Zone. Not to mention the fact that, because of this decision, he has relinquished his badge. So this cloak of authority that he used to have is no longer there. […]

When we see Vignette again at the start of season 2, she’s the same character, in very, very, very different circumstances than we left her in. […] don’t forget that Vignette joined the Black Raven in season 1. So without spoiling too much, it’s very safe to say the Black Raven story line is very much Vignette’s story line.

And what’s next for our other star-crossed lovers Imogen and Agreus?

[A]s we’re putting some characters behind the wall, it felt necessary to look outwards with other stories. With Imogen and Agreus, we’re definitely looking outwards, and just from a purely visual standpoint, they’re going to find themselves in some very different environments in season 2. And they’re going to end up in some places that we’ve heard of and are probably curious about.

Will there be more politics?

[T]here’s going to be some sort of geopolitical tensions that are growing, that are sort of unrelated to what’s going on in the ghetto, but will dovetail into Imogen and Agreus’s story, and into what’s going on in Balefire Hall. And just in general in season 2, things get a bit more complex, and we start having a bit more fun with everything.

So when can we expect to see season 2?

There hasn’t been an official anouncement from Amazon or the showrunners yet but judging by the production schedule season 1 went through a release date for the new episode some time in the first half of 2021 seems plausible.

(Season 1 began filming in September 2017 and was originally supposed to come out in early 2019, even before extensive re-shoots caused the delay.)

Philo (Orlando Bloom) finds himself at a manor outside the city facing Absalom Breakspear (Jared Harris), who thinks Philo is the murderer of Aisling Querelle (Erika Stárková). When his attempt to shoot Philo fails, the two start talking and their conversation brings a few surprising revelations for both of them. Breakspear lets Philo go the following morning and promises to have Vignette released as well.

After her night with Agreus (David Gyasi), Imogen (Tamzin Merchant) returns to the Spurnrose house in the morning and a suspicous Ezra (Andrew Gower) tells her that he would go away for the day to inspect his new ship, the “Swan”. Imogen uses his absence to sneak back into Agreus’ house and they continue their affair. However, they are observed by Ezra, who confronts them and threatens Agreus with a gun.

Jonah Breakspear (Arty Froushan) is in for a few unexpected turns of events himself as not everything he has been made to believe all his life turns out to be true. Back in the city, Philo is finally able to uncover the truth about the killings on Carnival Row with the help of the haruspex Aioffe (Alice Krige), and he teams up with Vignette (Cara Delevingne) to go after the Darkasher and the person controlling it.

After being arrested, Philo (Orlando Bloom) is put in a cell with human prisoners who are told he’s a half-blood. Vignette (Cara Delevingne), who was previously put in the fae cell next to him, warms him about an attack by his fellow inmates and he is able to fight them off. Philo admits that the murdered fae singer Aisling was his mother. He and Vignette finally declare their love for each other, just before Philo is transferred to another location.

After Imogen (Tamzin Merchant) and Mr Agreus (David Gyasi) return after the auction, Imogen finds her brother Ezra (Andrew Gower) aggravated and upset over the arrest in their own home and after he learned that their father once gave refuge to a pregnant pix. He promises his sister that he will negotiate an end of her obligations to Agreus, but Imogen doesn’t seem too happy about it.

Later Ezra and Agreus meet to discuss business, and Ezra inquires about Agreus’ past as as a skipjack, a kind of bounty hunter for escaped indentured fae, and questions his morality. Afterwards Ezra tells Imogen he good news that they might be able to sever their ties with Agreus sooner than expected but Imogen reacts rather disappointed. She observes Agreus’ house and decides to give him a late night visit.
