“Ellis” First Images

After filming wrapped on new detective drama Ellis earlier this year, we are finally treated with some first images from the series.

DCI Ellis is a tenacious cop who is parachuted into failing investigations. Each two-hour episode sees Ellis—accompanied by her right-hand man, DS Harper—arrive at a different police station, where she must win over the local detectives and immerse herself in the cases she has come to solve. As a Black female cop, Ellis is used to being dismissed and overlooked, but she is a first-class murder detective with a determination for justice and a deep well of compassion for those who need it.

Ellis is played by Sharon D. Clarke (best known for her work on Holby City, Doctor Who and Red, White and Royal Blue) while her right-hand man Harper is played by Andrew Gower.

The series will consist of three feature-length episodes and is expected to be released on Channel 5 (UK) in autumn 2024. It will cross the pond to debut on Acorn TV (US), probably in early 2025.

Tellyvisions called Ellis “a mashup of Line of Duty and D.I. Ray” and added “that’s a compliment”:

Line of Duty would send a team into a different precinct every season to find out why investigations were not going as they were supposed to, with a writ to find the bad apple undermining police efforts. Ellis’ pacing is slightly different — each feature-length episode will move from precinct to precinct instead of each season, and investigations won’t always fail due to someone undermining things — but the setup and rotating guest cast remain the same. Meanwhile, Ellis, a Black British police inspector, will have to deal with constantly sexist and racist microaggressions from the different staff she encounters, much like D.I. Ray does, with the same drive to see justice done instead of blaming the nearest person of color.

While the images don’t give away much, we can anticipate that the new series will be a gritty turn towards the detective genre for Channel 5.

Andrew Gower Talks Music, Carnival Row and YOU

Andrew Gower spoke to Erin Tatum from Cliché Mag about Carnival Row (Prime Video) and YOU (Netflix) – whose new seasons have recently been released and both feature Andrew Gower – as well as his band Gustaffson and what the future holds for them.

Season two for Ezra is all about his search for his own truth and family justice. Without his sister in the Burgue, he has a purposeless existence and he’ll do anything to get her back. His unrealistic Victorian etiquette standards are tested more than ever. He has enormous fears of becoming the thing he hates most.

Andrew Gower about his character’s journey in Season 2 of Carnival Row

The dark psychology of this series is definitely what draws the audience in. It’s a very trendy genre right now! My character – Detective Peter Andrew – is on the hunt for a London serial killer throughout this new series. So I was keen to play against the psychology of Joe (Penn Badgley).

Andrew Gower on YOU

The next step for us as an unsigned band would be to make our first album. We’ve written so many new songs and have some incredible people to collaborate with so it’s all about finding a home for GUSTAFFSON to do that. In the meantime, we are recording a selection of live videos for some of our new tracks. We’re collaborating with some amazing music producers and film directors. It’s an exciting way to combine both my filming and music passions. There’s nothing better than being back in the studio with the band. It has very quickly become my happy place!

You Season 4 Streaming now on Netflix

Season 4 of Netflix hit series YOU was released today (9 February 2023) at 12:00am Pacific time (8:00am GMT) and Part 1 is now available to stream.

YOU centres around New York bookstore manager Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley), on the outside an unassuming guy, who politely helps an elderly lady with her luggage and takes care of his neighbour’s son, when she fights with her abusive partner. On the inside his thoughts betray him and the extreme obsessions that he develops for several women throughout the series. He is willing to remove any obstacle (including murdering friends and ex-boyfriends) that might be in the way of reaching his goal to make these women fall in love with him.

After the events of Season 3, Joe is forced to flee to Europe and adopt a new identy. He is now Jonathan Moore, a professor at a London university, set to leave his “messy” part behind, start a new life and finally find “true love” but things don’t go quite as planned on the “European holiday”: Joe finds himself in the strange new role of reluctant detective in a murder mystery and seems to have gained a stalker of his own.

Andrew Gower plays Detective Peter Andrews and according to IMDb he appears in episodes 3, 4 and 6.
