It’s a Wrap on Carnival Row Season 2.1

Filming of the first half of season 2 of Victorian noir series Carnival Row finally wrapped in Prague earlier this month. Production had been halted amid the on-going Covid-19 pandemic in mid-March.

During lockdown Cara Delevingne spoke to entertainment new magazine Variety and said “that she filmed six of the eight planned episodes, but she’s not sure when the season will air.” The interview, which was published in June 2020 further quotes Delevingne: “The second season is going to be so good, but I don’t know when we’re going to finish it, and probably not until the winter, because it has to be cold outside and snowing and miserable.”

In another recent interview with entertaintment website Collider, Orlando Bloom, who is also an executive producer on the show, explained the decision to split season 2.

“I was 3 weeks from finishing the season. To keep the momentum of the show moving forward […] they are going to release the first half of the season and add one [episode].”

We would like to go back and polish it off a little bit. I managed to get in and out and get some stuff done so we could close out that first half of the second season which I think will tease people into wanting more which is good.”

The first half will be made of 5 episodes and the material mainly filmed before lockdown including a few addtional scenes that were re-shoot recently in Prague. The second half of the season, consisting of 4 episodes, appears to not have been filmed yet.

Old Port Dubrovnik

The block that was supposed to film on location in Dubrovnik (Croatia), which first had to be postponed from October to March due to the first production hiatus following the change in showrunners, and then cancelled altogether due to the pandemic, will now be filmed on an entirely new set at Barrandov Studios in Prague (Czech Republic).

“There are a couple of storylines that were actually going to shoot on location in another part of Europe which Covid prevented. They were all about to go and film in Croatia, everything was set and Covid just killed that. Actually what I think is going to be more interesting is what they are doing now: they’re just taking over another giant part of the studio to build out this other world which was going to be a Croatia location and I think it’s going to be even more interesting. Because with the amount of space they’ve got to built out these worlds and the talent of people who are working on building the worlds out, it’s really rich.

Season 2 of Carnival Row originally started filming in late September 2019. Cara Delevingne, Orlando Bloom, Tamzin Merchant, David Gyasi, Caroline Ford, Ariyon Bakare and Andrew Gower are all confirmed to reprise their roles.
